SACRAMENTO – Today, Sacramento County Public Health Officer, Dr. Olivia Kasirye will
prescribe walking and/or biking in a Sacramento Area Park to Sacramento County Supervisor
Don Nottoli as part of the County’s participation in a national campaign to promote physical
activity in local and regional parks to support improved health outcomes.
The local effort for Park Prescriptions is being led by Sacramento County Regional Parks and
Health & Human Services Departments, along with 18 other Park Agencies in the Sacramento
area. Park prescriptions call for walking and/or bicycling in local parks, for 30 minutes each
day, to prevent (or treat) health problems resulting from inactivity and poor diet. Park
Prescriptions encourages visits to public parks that are easily accessible to most
neighborhoods. The Park Prescription provides physicians and other healthcare providers with
a memorable tool (a prescription pad and motivation) to inspire patients to improve their health.
Park Prescription programs benefit public lands by promoting park use and stewardship and
increasing potential funding sources.
Presentation will take place at 5:45 p.m. at La Bou at 8887 Folsom Blvd. Sacramento, 95826.
Presentation is part of five community workshops coordinated in conjunction with SACOG.
SACOG coordinates transportation planning, funding and project delivery for Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer, Yolo, Sutter and Yuba counties and the cities within them. SACOG also engages elected officials in land use and other regional issues.
